Should your thyroid and adrenal system be dysfunctional, it can be responsible for a considerable number of disorders. Abnormal thyroid function (both too high and too low) can be the result of a nutritional deficiency and/or is often the result of an autoimmune phenomenon (when your own immune system is stimulated to attack your thyroid gland). Graves’s disease causes hyperthyroidism, an overactive thyroid gland. Hashimoto’s disease causes hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid gland. It is not only essential to support your thyroid and balance your thyroid hormones but is imperative to identify the triggers that are responsible for the inappropriate stimulation of your immune system. Patients with a minimum of one autoimmune disorder are at least three times more likely to develop another autoimmune disorder if not properly treated.
The list of symptoms for an abnormal thyroid function is vast. Basically, if you ask, “Could this be attributed to abnormal thyroid function?”. The answer would be yes.
The most replaced thyroid hormone is called Thyroxine, also known as T4. Thyroxine is converted to Triiodothyronine (known as T3), which is the actual ACTIVE thyroid hormone. For multiple reasons, including nutritional deficiencies and environmental toxins, some people are unable to convert T4 to T3 in an efficient manner. These people convert too much of their T4 to Reverse T3, another thyroid hormone. Reverse T3 can block the action of T3 causing symptoms of low thyroid function. In this case, just taking T4 can make you worse. Proper treatment includes improving the conversion of the inactive T4 to the active T3 and treating with T3 if necessary.
The adrenal glands (two little glands, one on the top of each of your kidneys) work closely with the thyroid gland. This is important, as they are the body’s source for cortisol and are a major manufacturer of sex hormones for both females and males. Prosperous adrenal glands are essential for graceful aging. The goal is to remove triggers that have an adverse effect on adrenal function. Things like; stress, sleep apnea, infection, food allergies, glucose intolerance, nutritional deficiencies, toxins, and heavy metals. Stress management guidance includes the acquisition of necessary nutrients that allow for maximal adrenal function, as well as incorporating calming herbal supplements that support the brain’s signaling to the adrenal glands.
